Why it doesn’t upload

Your browser can already decode GIF frames and encode video with your device’s hardware. Uploading the GIF would only add a wait, so it stays on your device.

  • The video plays once in most players. Sites such as X, Reddit and Discord loop short videos automatically.
  • Browsers with WebCodecs convert to MP4, WebM, MOV and MKV instantly. Other formats, and older browsers, use the FFmpeg engine, a one-time 31 MB download.

Why convert a GIF to MP4?

GIF stores every frame as a separate picture with 256 colors. Video stores only what changes between frames, so the same animation as an MP4 is typically 5 to 20 times smaller and has better color.

Will the video loop like the GIF?

The loop isn’t part of an MP4 file; the player decides. Social sites and messaging apps loop short silent videos automatically. On a web page, add loop autoplay muted playsinline to the video tag.

Does converting keep the GIF’s speed?

Yes. Each frame keeps its own delay. Delays under 20 ms are shown as 100 ms, which is what every browser actually does when playing the GIF.

Can I turn a video into a GIF instead?
