Should you convert MOV to PNG?

Yes, whenever you need pictures out of a clip: a thumbnail, a still for a document, or evidence from dashcam footage. The MOV isn’t changed; stills are saved beside it as PNG files.

MOV is Apple’s video container, usually H.264 or HEVC from an iPhone; PNG is a lossless image format with full transparency. Use PNG for screenshots, interface graphics, logos and anything with transparency or lettering, and as the working copy of an image you are still editing.

What changes when MOV becomes PNG

One frame, or many

Save a single frame at the moment you type, one frame every few seconds, or every frame of a short clip, up to 3,000 stills. Many stills download together as a ZIP.

PNG keeps every pixel

PNG stills are an exact copy of each decoded frame, which suits screenshots of text or footage you’ll edit. They are several times larger than JPG.

Stills are only as sharp as the video

A frame from compressed video carries the video’s compression, and fast motion blurs. Pick a moment with little movement for the clearest picture.

This page is put together from our notes on each format, choosing only what is true of MOV and PNG, so every pairing states the same facts the same way. How these pages are made.

Why it doesn’t upload

A still from your own video shouldn’t require sending the whole video to a server. Frames are decoded and saved on your device, and the video never leaves it.

How to check for yourself

Worth knowing

  • About the MOV. A MOV from an iPhone is usually an ordinary H.264 or HEVC video that can move into MP4 without re-encoding; a MOV exported from an editor may be ProRes and ten times larger.
  • About the PNG. Photographs saved as PNG balloon in size. A holiday photo that is 3 MB as JPG can be 15 MB as PNG, because lossless compression can do very little with the fine grain of a real photograph.
  • AVI, WMV, FLV and other older formats use the FFmpeg engine, a one-time 31 MB download.

Questions

How do I get a single frame from an MOV as PNG?

Add the video, choose “One frame”, type the moment in seconds and save it. The PNG is exactly the size of the video frame.

Can I save every frame of an MOV?

Yes. A short clip at 30 frames a second gives 30 PNG files per second, bundled into a ZIP. For long videos, one frame per second is usually enough.
