Should you convert MP4 to JPG?

Yes, whenever you need pictures out of a clip: a thumbnail, a still for a document, or evidence from dashcam footage. The MP4 isn’t changed; stills are saved beside it as JPG files.

MP4 is the video container that plays on everything, usually holding H.264 video and AAC audio; JPG is a lossy photo format that trades detail you can’t see for much smaller files. Use JPG for photographs you are sending, uploading or printing, especially when a form or app is fussy about formats.

What changes when MP4 becomes JPG

One frame, or many

Save a single frame at the moment you type, one frame every few seconds, or every frame of a short clip, up to 3,000 stills. Many stills download together as a ZIP.

JPG keeps stills small

JPG stills at quality 90 look the same as the video frame and are a fraction of the size of PNG, which matters when you export hundreds of them.

Stills are only as sharp as the video

A frame from compressed video carries the video’s compression, and fast motion blurs. Pick a moment with little movement for the clearest picture.

This page is put together from our notes on each format, choosing only what is true of MP4 and JPG, so every pairing states the same facts the same way. How these pages are made.

Why it doesn’t upload

A still from your own video shouldn’t require sending the whole video to a server. Frames are decoded and saved on your device, and the video never leaves it.

Worth knowing

  • About the MP4. An MP4 that won’t play is rarely broken; it usually holds a newer codec such as HEVC or AV1 that the player doesn’t support.
  • About the JPG. Re-saving a JPG again and again degrades it, because each save compresses the already compressed version. Keep an original and export to JPG once, at the end.
  • AVI, WMV, FLV and other older formats use the FFmpeg engine, a one-time 31 MB download.

Questions

How do I get a single frame from an MP4 as JPG?

Add the video, choose “One frame”, type the moment in seconds and save it. The JPG is exactly the size of the video frame.

Can I save every frame of an MP4?

Yes. A short clip at 30 frames a second gives 30 JPG files per second, bundled into a ZIP. For long videos, one frame per second is usually enough.
