Common fix

Your video is too big for WhatsApp

A clip that sends as a video, not as a link or a file.

By Updated How we write these

WhatsApp: 16 MB per file

Photos, videos & voice sent as media. Checked 2026-09-16. Every limit we track.

WhatsApp has two different limits, and knowing which one you have hit decides the fix. Sent the normal way, as media, a video has to fit the media limit. Sent as a Document, the ceiling is vastly higher — but it arrives as a file with no preview and no inline playback, which is usually not what you wanted.

Phone video is large because it is high resolution at a high frame rate. A minute of 4K can be several hundred megabytes. The good news is that WhatsApp is watched on a phone screen, so almost all of that resolution is wasted anyway.

What to do

  1. Step 1

Cut what you do not need first

Trimming is free: it costs no quality at all and the saving is exactly proportional to what you remove. Ten seconds off a forty-second clip is a quarter of the file gone before you compress anything.

    Trim the clip
  2. Step 2

    Compress it to the limit

Pick WhatsApp from the destination presets and the tool works backwards from the limit to the settings, instead of asking you to guess at a bitrate. It runs on your device, so a 400 MB clip is never uploaded anywhere.

    Compress the video
  3. Step 3

    Check it still looks right

Play the result before you send it. If it looks soft, the clip is long for the limit — go back and trim more rather than accepting the mush, because the bitrate has to stretch across every second you keep.

Settings that work

Recommended settings
Resolution 720p or 1080p — it is being watched on a phone
Frame rate 30fps unless the footage is fast motion
Format MP4 with H.264, which every phone plays

Worth knowing

  • WhatsApp re-compresses media again at its end, so sending something already close to the limit gives it less to work with. Aim comfortably under rather than exactly at it.
  • Sending as a Document keeps the original quality and skips the limit, at the cost of the inline preview. For something that has to look right — a wedding clip, work footage — that is often the better trade.

Questions

Why does WhatsApp make my video look bad?

It re-compresses media on send. Starting from a file that is already at the limit leaves it nothing to work with, which is why a trimmed, cleanly compressed clip survives the trip better.

How do I send a long video on WhatsApp?

Send it as a Document, which raises the ceiling enormously, or split it into parts. Compressing an hour-long video to the media limit will not end well.

Is there a WhatsApp video length limit?

For a normal media send the size limit is what bites first — a longer video simply has to be lower quality to fit. Status videos have their own, much shorter, length cap.
