Remove the sound from a video

Strip the sound from an MP4 or any other video and keep the picture exactly as it was. Nothing is re-encoded, so it finishes in seconds even on a long clip.

How to use it

    Press remove sound. The picture is copied across untouched, so there is no quality loss and no long wait.

Why it doesn’t upload

Muting a video shouldn’t mean uploading it. The background chatter you want gone is often exactly why the clip is private, so the whole job happens on your device.

How to check for yourself

Worth knowing

  • Every audio track is removed, including second languages and commentary.
  • The picture is copied as it is. If the original codec can’t go in the format you choose, it is re-encoded instead and takes longer.
  • There is no way to lower the sound instead of removing it here; use Compress Video’s sound option, or extract the audio and change its level.
  • Older formats such as AVI and WMV use the FFmpeg engine, a one-time 31 MB download.

Questions

Does removing the audio reduce video quality?

No. The picture is copied across bit for bit, so the video is identical. Only the soundtrack is dropped.

How much smaller will the file be?

By roughly the size of the soundtrack, usually 5 to 15 percent of a normal video. If you need a much smaller file, use Compress Video, which can also mute it while shrinking.

Can I mute just part of a video?

Not with this tool. Trim the section out with Trim Video, or mute the whole thing and add your own soundtrack in an editor.

Why would I mute a video?

Background conversation, music that would be flagged for copyright, wind noise on a phone recording, or a screen recording that picked up a call. It is also the fastest way to make a clip safe to play out loud.
