How to use it

    Leave the background on whatever is at the edges, and nudge the tolerance if patches are left behind or parts of the subject vanish.

Why it doesn’t upload

Finding one colour and making it transparent is arithmetic over the pixels, and your browser is already good at that. There is no model to run on a server, so the picture stays with you.

How to check for yourself

Worth knowing

  • This works by colour, not by recognising a subject. It cuts away the plain area connected to the edges of the picture. It cannot cut a person out of a photograph taken in a room, a park or against a busy wall — nothing in the settings will make that work.
  • The background has to reach the edge of the image. Anything enclosed by the subject — a gap between an arm and a body, the hole in a letter “O” — is kept, because it is not connected to the border.
  • Soft edges, hair and motion blur come out rough. Softening the edge helps a little; it is not a substitute for a proper matte.
  • A shadow on the backdrop counts as a different colour from the backdrop. Raise the tolerance to take it too, or keep it low to leave the shadow in.
  • The result is saved as PNG or WebP. JPG has no transparency, so it is not offered — a JPG would just put the background back as white.

Questions

How do I make a white background transparent?

Add the image and press remove the background. The white is read from the border of the picture, so nothing needs configuring in the usual case. If a grey shadow is left behind, raise the tolerance until it goes.

Can this cut a person out of a photo?

No. It removes a plain area of colour connected to the edges of the image. Separating a person from a real background needs a trained model, which this tool does not use — it would mean shipping a large model file and, in most services, uploading your photo.

Why is part of my subject transparent too?

Something in the subject is close enough in colour to the background and touches the edge — a white sleeve against a white backdrop, for example. Lower the tolerance, and crop the subject away from the edge first if you can.

Why is there a pale outline around the subject?

Edge pixels are a blend of subject and background. The tool already removes most of that tint from partly transparent pixels; increasing soften the edge to 2 px usually deals with the rest.

What format should I save in?

PNG for anything you will send to someone or place in a document — it opens everywhere and keeps transparency exactly. WebP for the web, where it does the same job in a smaller file.

Does it work on a batch of product photos?

Yes, and that is what it is best at. Add them all; each is cut with the same settings and they come back together. Consistent studio backdrops give consistent results.
