How to check for yourself

Worth knowing

  • Gaps are cut, not shortened to a neat length. If a pause should stay but be shorter, an editor is the better tool.
  • Breaths and room noise can read as sound. If gaps are being kept, choose a noisier threshold; if quiet speech is being cut, choose a quieter one.
  • The result is shorter than the original, so anything timed against it (subtitles, notes with timestamps) no longer lines up.

Questions

How do I cut dead air out of a recording?

Add the file, leave the gap at 0.5 seconds and the threshold at −45 dB, and press remove silence. Those defaults suit most speech recorded with a decent microphone.

It cut parts of my speech. What should I change?

Choose a noisier threshold (−35 dB or −25 dB). The tool treats anything quieter than the threshold as silence, so a whispered word can fall below a very low setting.

It left the long pauses in. What now?

Choose a quieter threshold (−55 dB) or a shorter gap. Hiss and hum from the room may be sitting above your current threshold, which makes a “silent” gap look like sound.

Can I just trim the start and end instead?
