Should you convert PNG to AVIF?

You want the smallest possible web images — AVIF often halves the size of a PNG photo or graphic while keeping transparency.

A safe conversion when AVIF is what you need: both PNG and AVIF keep every pixel, so the picture itself doesn’t change.

Bear in mind AVIF is opens in current browsers and apps: it works in current Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari, but few editors, chat apps or upload forms.

PNG is a lossless image format with full transparency; AVIF is a modern image format that squeezes photos smaller than WebP. Use AVIF for photos on a website when you want the smallest files and can serve a fallback to older browsers.

How to convert PNG to AVIF

What changes when PNG becomes AVIF

Transparency is kept

PNG and AVIF both support transparency, so transparent backgrounds and soft edges come through unchanged.

Expect a much smaller file

PNG: A 12-megapixel photo is often 12–20 MB; a screenshot is usually 100 KB–1 MB. AVIF: Often around half the size of the equivalent JPG. Shrinking the file is often the main reason to make this conversion.

Why it doesn’t upload

Changing a picture’s format is work your browser already knows how to do. Sending your photos to a server first only adds waiting and risk, so nothing is sent.

How to check for yourself

  • About the PNG. Photographs saved as PNG balloon in size. A holiday photo that is 3 MB as JPG can be 15 MB as PNG, because lossless compression can do very little with the fine grain of a real photograph.
  • About the AVIF. AVIF’s savings are real, but encoding is slow, so a batch that takes seconds as JPG can take minutes as AVIF.
  • DDS, PSD, EXR, XWD and JPEG 2000 are read by the FFmpeg engine, a one-time 31 MB download.

Will converting PNG to AVIF lose quality?

AVIF is lossy, so some detail is discarded. The quality slider decides how much; the default of 90 is chosen so the difference is invisible in almost every photo.
