What these tools are for
Most image jobs are small and awkward: a passport photo that has to be exactly 413 by 531 pixels, a screenshot that has to fit under 2 MB, an iPhone photo that a government form refuses because it is HEIC. Every one of those is a few seconds of work for a browser, and none of them is a reason to hand a personal photo to a stranger’s server.
These tools use the same image codecs your browser already uses to show pictures on the web, so the work happens on your machine at local speed. Nothing is queued, nothing waits in line behind other people’s files, and there is no size cap beyond what your own device can hold in memory.
The trade is that very large batches depend on your hardware rather than a datacenter. A hundred photos on a laptop takes a minute or two; the same batch on a phone takes longer and is best split in half.

What each format is for, where it opens, and the mistake people usually make with it.
Which format should you use?
- PNG vs JPG Use JPG for photographs and PNG for everything with sharp edges: screenshots, logos, diagrams and text.
- WEBP vs PNG For images on a website, WebP does everything PNG does, transparency included, in a noticeably smaller file.
- WEBP vs JPG WebP makes photos about a quarter to a third smaller than JPG at the same visible quality, and every current browser shows it.
- AVIF vs WEBP AVIF usually produces the smallest file of any image format at the same quality, especially for photos, but it is slower to encode and slightly less widely supported.
- HEIC vs JPG HEIC stores iPhone photos in about half the space of JPG with the same quality, which is why Apple uses it.
- SVG vs PNG SVG is drawn from shapes, so logos and icons stay razor sharp at any size in a tiny file.
Questions
Are these image tools really free?
Yes, and there is nothing to sign up for. The pages are static files and the work happens in your browser, so there is no per-file cost to pass on and no reason to put a watermark on the result.
Is there a file size limit?
No limit is imposed by us. The practical ceiling is your device’s memory: a phone browser will usually manage photos up to about 50 megapixels, a laptop far more. What the limits really are explains where the ceiling sits.
Do you keep or look at the photos?
No. The file never leaves the page — there is no upload step to keep anything from. You can watch the network panel stay empty while a photo converts: how to check for yourself.
Which image format should I use?
JPG for photographs that have to open anywhere, PNG for screenshots and anything with sharp edges or transparency, WebP or AVIF when the picture is going on your own website. The format pages go through each one.
