Should you convert PNG to JPG?

A PNG screenshot or photo is too big for an upload limit, or a portal insists on JPG. Converting usually cuts the file size by 70–90% for photos.

Do this for photographs, where JPG saves a lot of space for a difference that’s hard to see. Keep the PNG if the picture is a screenshot, a diagram or anything with text and hard edges, which JPG smudges.

PNG is a lossless image format with full transparency; JPG is a lossy photo format that trades detail you can’t see for much smaller files. PNG transparency has nowhere to go in a JPG, so transparent areas get filled with a background color — white by default, or any color you pick.

How to convert PNG to JPG

  1. 01

    Add your PNG

Drop your PNG image onto the box, or click to choose it. It is read from your disk and stays there.

  2. 02

    Check the settings

The output is already set to JPG. Change the quality if you want to; the defaults suit most files.

  3. 03

    Save the JPG

Press convert and save the JPG. Several files come back together as a ZIP.

What changes when PNG becomes JPG

PNG keeps everything, JPG does not

PNG stores the picture exactly. JPG throws away detail to save space, and the quality setting decides how much. At the default of 90 almost nobody can tell on a photograph; on text, lines and flat color the loss shows sooner, as soft halos around edges.

JPG can’t hold transparency

Any transparent area in the PNG has to become a solid color, because JPG has no alpha channel. The background setting decides which color; white suits documents and most uploads, but pick the color of the page it will sit on if you know it, because it can’t be undone later.

Expect a much smaller file

PNG: A 12-megapixel photo is often 12–20 MB; a screenshot is usually 100 KB–1 MB. JPG: A 12-megapixel phone photo is usually 2–5 MB. Shrinking the file is often the main reason to make this conversion.

This page is put together from our notes on each format, choosing only what is true of PNG and JPG, so every pairing states the same facts the same way. How these pages are made.

Why it doesn’t upload

Changing a picture’s format is work your browser already knows how to do. Sending your photos to a server first only adds waiting and risk, so nothing is sent.

How to check for yourself

Worth knowing

  • About the PNG. Photographs saved as PNG balloon in size. A holiday photo that is 3 MB as JPG can be 15 MB as PNG, because lossless compression can do very little with the fine grain of a real photograph.
  • About the JPG. Re-saving a JPG again and again degrades it, because each save compresses the already compressed version. Keep an original and export to JPG once, at the end.
  • DDS, PSD, EXR, XWD and JPEG 2000 are read by the FFmpeg engine, a one-time 31 MB download.

Questions

Will converting PNG to JPG lose quality?

JPG is lossy, so some detail is discarded. The quality slider decides how much; the default of 90 is chosen so the difference is invisible in almost every photo.

What happens to a transparent background when converting PNG to JPG?

JPG has no transparency, so transparent areas are filled with the background color you choose, white by default.
