Should you convert SVG to TIFF?

A safe conversion when TIFF is what you need: both SVG and TIFF keep every pixel, so the picture itself doesn’t change.

Bear in mind TIFF is has patchy support: it works in photo editors, macOS Preview and Windows Photos, but not Chrome, Firefox or most upload forms.

SVG is a vector format made of shapes instead of pixels; TIFF is a high-fidelity format used by scanners, printers and archives. Use TIFF when a printer, publisher or archive asks for it, or for master copies of scans.

How to convert SVG to TIFF

What changes when SVG becomes TIFF

Nothing is discarded

SVG and TIFF both keep every pixel, so the picture survives the move intact. You can convert back and forth as often as you like without it degrading.

Transparency is kept

SVG and TIFF both support transparency, so transparent backgrounds and soft edges come through unchanged.

Animations become a still

TIFF can’t move, so an animated SVG is saved as its first frame. Choose GIF or APNG instead to keep the animation.

Pick the size you need

An SVG has no fixed pixel size, so it is drawn at the size you choose, 1024 pixels on the long side by default. For sharp results on high-resolution screens, use twice the size it will be shown at.

Expect a much larger file

TIFF is far bigger for the same content. Choose it because something needs TIFF, not to send or store the file. SVG: A simple logo is often only a few KB. TIFF: A scanned A4 page can be 20–50 MB.

Why it doesn’t upload

Changing a picture’s format is work your browser already knows how to do. Sending your photos to a server first only adds waiting and risk, so nothing is sent.

How to check for yourself

  • About the SVG. Converting a photograph to SVG does not turn it into vectors. Either the pixels get wrapped inside an SVG, which is bigger and no sharper, or a tracer turns it into flat blobs of color.
  • About the TIFF. Multi-page TIFFs from scanners look like one picture in some viewers, so pages go unnoticed when converting.
  • DDS, PSD, EXR, XWD and JPEG 2000 are read by the FFmpeg engine, a one-time 31 MB download.

Will converting SVG to TIFF lose quality?

No. SVG and TIFF are both lossless, so every pixel is kept.

Will the TIFF be smaller than the SVG?
