Tracing suits logos, icons and flat artwork and scales cleanly. Photos are better kept as pixels inside the SVG.

Should you convert SVG to WEBP?
You need a raster WebP of a vector graphic for a CMS or platform that won’t accept SVG.
A safe conversion when WEBP is what you need: both SVG and WEBP keep every pixel, so the picture itself doesn’t change.
Bear in mind WEBP is opens in current browsers and apps: it works in every current browser, but plenty of desktop apps, print shops and upload forms still refuse it.
SVG is a vector format made of shapes instead of pixels; WEBP is a web image format that can be lossy or lossless, with transparency and animation. Use WEBP for pictures on your own website or app, where every kilobyte affects load time.

What changes when SVG becomes WEBP
Transparency is kept
SVG and WEBP both support transparency, so transparent backgrounds and soft edges come through unchanged.
Animated files keep their first frame
WEBP can animate, but this converter writes animated WEBP only for GIF and APNG targets. An animated SVG is saved as a still of its first frame.
Pick the size you need
An SVG has no fixed pixel size, so it is drawn at the size you choose, 1024 pixels on the long side by default. For sharp results on high-resolution screens, use twice the size it will be shown at.
Expect a much larger file
WEBP is far bigger for the same content. Choose it because something needs WEBP, not to send or store the file. SVG: A simple logo is often only a few KB. WEBP: Typically 25–35% smaller than the same JPG.
This page is put together from our notes on each format, choosing only what is true of SVG and WEBP, so every pairing states the same facts the same way. How these pages are made.
Why it doesn’t upload
Changing a picture’s format is work your browser already knows how to do. Sending your photos to a server first only adds waiting and risk, so nothing is sent.
How to check for yourselfWorth knowing
- About the SVG. Converting a photograph to SVG does not turn it into vectors. Either the pixels get wrapped inside an SVG, which is bigger and no sharper, or a tracer turns it into flat blobs of color.
- About the WEBP. Images saved from websites arrive as WEBP even when the page looked like it showed a JPG, and then a document editor or upload form refuses them.
- DDS, PSD, EXR, XWD and JPEG 2000 are read by the FFmpeg engine, a one-time 31 MB download.
