Compress to 50 KB

Compress a PDF to 50 KB

50 KB is the tightest limit people commonly meet. A one-page typed document gets there; a one-page scan usually does too once it is grayscale at a lower resolution; anything longer than two or three scanned pages generally doesn’t at readable quality. Type 50 KB, run it, and check the smallest print before you submit.

Who asks for 50 KB?

  • Recruitment and examination portals, especially in India, which often cap each certificate or ID proof at 50 KB.
  • Scholarship and admission forms built around the same upload system.
  • Older government and banking forms that set one tiny limit for every attachment.
  • Online forms that take a signature or a single proof page as a PDF.

What to expect at 50 KB

A one-page typed document
Comfortable. Text and lines are tiny; a typed page is often under 50 KB already.
A one-page scan or photo
Achievable in grayscale at a reduced resolution. Readable on screen; fine print softens.
A 2–3 page scan
Tight. Expect flattening, which costs the selectable text, and check every page is still legible.
A 4+ page scan
Not realistic at readable quality. Submit only the pages asked for, or ask whether the limit is per page.

How to do it

  1. 1 Submit only what is asked for A portal asking for a certificate wants the certificate, not its covering letter. Every page you drop is roughly a third of the budget back on a three-page scan.
  2. 2 Make it grayscale first Color is the first thing to go at this size. Scan in grayscale or black and white, or convert the PDF to black and white before compressing — a two-tone page is many times smaller than a color one.
  3. 3 Open Compress PDF with the limit filled in The button at the top of this page sets Make the PDF smaller than to 49 KB; type 48 for a little more margin. The file is read by the page; nothing is uploaded.
  4. 4 Look at the before-and-after Zoom in on the smallest print — a registration number, a date, a seal. If it can’t be read, the person checking the form can’t read it either.
  5. 5 Confirm the final size The exact byte count is shown. Portals usually mean 50,000 bytes; a file at 51 KB is rejected with the same unhelpful message as one at 5 MB.

Why is 50 KB so much harder than 100 KB?

Because at 100 KB a scanned page can keep its resolution and lose only some sharpness, while at 50 KB it has to give up two things at once: color, and a good share of its pixels. The difference between the two limits is not twice as much compression — it is the point at which a photograph of a page stops being comfortably readable.

That is why this page gives different advice from the 100 KB one. At 50 KB, preparing the page matters more than the compressor: grayscale, one page, cropped to the document with no table showing around it.

If the text must stay selectable — some portals run their own checks on it — don’t flatten. Submit fewer pages instead.

Questions

How do I reduce a PDF to 50 KB?

Keep only the pages required, convert scans to grayscale, then open Compress PDF and type 48 KB. Check the before-and-after for legibility and confirm the final size before you upload.

Why won’t my PDF go below 50 KB?

It is almost always a multi-page or color scan. Each page is a photograph with a floor below which it can’t stay readable. Drop pages, go grayscale, or allow flattening and accept losing the text layer.

Will a 50 KB PDF still be readable when printed?

A typed page, yes — its text is unchanged. A scan compressed this far looks soft on paper; it is usually acceptable for a form that is checked once, not for anything that will be copied again.

Does 50 KB mean 50,000 bytes or 51,200?

Portals almost always mean 50,000. Aim for 48 KB and it clears either reading.
