Handwriting to Text — Handwritten PDF to Typed PDF

Turn handwritten notes into typed text: drop a handwritten PDF or photos, check what was read, and save a typed PDF — every line where you wrote it, or reflowed into clean paragraphs — or keep the handwriting and make the scan searchable. Nothing is uploaded.

  • Reads real handwriting An AI handwriting model reads each line — print or joined-up — where a text OCR sees scribbles.
  • Check before you save Every line shown beside what was read, so a wrong word is fixed in a second.
  • 100% private The model runs in your browser. Your notes are never uploaded.

How to convert handwriting to text in a PDF

  1. Add your files: Drop a handwritten PDF or photos of the pages, and choose typed text (same layout or reflowed) or a clean, searchable scan.

  2. Check the settings: Press Read the handwriting to check each line beside what was read and fix any word — or go straight to Convert to PDF.

  3. Save the result: Save the PDF, and the text as a .txt file. The first use downloads the handwriting model (68 MB) once.

Why it doesn’t upload

Handwritten pages are the most personal documents people own: diaries, lecture notes, letters, a doctor’s notes, a signed form. Here the handwriting model is downloaded to your browser and the pages are read inside this tab, so no service ever sees them — and it keeps working offline once the model is in.

Worth knowing

  • English only. The model was trained on English handwriting; other languages come out as English-looking guesses.
  • Neat writing reads well; rushed joined-up writing, very small writing and faint pencil read worse. Check each line before you rely on it — that is what the review step is for.
  • Lines are found automatically. Writing in two columns, at an angle across the page, or around drawings can be read in the wrong order or split oddly; drawings and diagrams are not carried into the typed versions.
  • It runs on your device: roughly half a minute a page on a laptop, longer on a phone. Up to 30 pages at a time works best.
  • The first use downloads the handwriting model (68 MB) from Hugging Face; after that it loads from your browser’s cache and works offline.

Under the hood

What happens to your file

Each page is drawn by pdf.js (or decoded from the photo, its page found and squared up) and its lighting evened out. Ink is split from paper with Otsu’s threshold, ruled lines are taken out, and the pieces of ink are grouped into lines along the page’s slant, each line cut out with only its own ink. Every line is then read by TrOCR-small, Microsoft’s handwriting model trained on the IAM database, in 8-bit form on ONNX Runtime in Web Workers, a few lines at a time. The typed PDF is written with pdf-lib; the searchable scan keeps the cleaned page and lays the words over it as invisible text (render mode 3).

Runs on TrOCRONNX Runtimepdf.jspdf-lib

Why convert handwriting to text on your own device?

Handwritten pages can’t be searched, edited, pasted into an email or read aloud. Typing them up takes as long as writing them did. A handwriting model reads each line for you, and you only correct the words it got wrong.

Ordinary OCR doesn’t help here: it is built for printed letters and turns handwriting into noise. And the pages people want typed — journals, lecture notes, letters, a relative’s recipes — are exactly the ones nobody wants on a stranger’s server. Here the model runs in your browser, so they never leave your device.

Common reasons to turn handwritten notes into text

  • Lecture and meeting notes

Get notes into a typed document you can search, share and paste from.

  • Journals and letters

Keep a typed copy of a diary or old letters alongside the originals.

  • Forms filled in by hand

Pull the answers off a handwritten form without retyping each one.

  • Making a scanned notebook searchable

Keep the handwriting on the page and still find any word with Ctrl+F.

  • Recipes and family papers

A clean typed version that prints and reads easily.

Tips for the most accurate handwriting recognition

  1. Photograph pages flat, in daylight, filling the frame — shadows and a steep angle cost more accuracy than messy writing.
  2. Dark pen reads better than pencil; if the writing is faint, a scan beats a photo.
  3. Use Read the handwriting first on anything that matters, and fix the misread words before converting.
  4. Writing in columns or around drawings? Expect to check the line order in the review.
  5. Only need a clean copy of the pages, not the text? Scan to PDF straightens and cleans photos without reading them.

Questions

How do I convert handwriting to text for free?

Drop a handwritten PDF or photos of the pages here, press Read the handwriting, fix any word that was misread, then Convert to PDF. You get a typed PDF and a .txt file — free, with no sign-up and no upload.

Can it keep my handwriting and just make it searchable?

Yes — choose Clean scan · Searchable. The page is cleaned up (shadows and yellow light removed) and the words that were read are laid invisibly over your writing, so Ctrl+F, selecting and copying work while the page still shows your handwriting.

How accurate is the handwriting recognition?

On neat, printed-style writing most words come out right; joined-up, hurried or very small writing produces more mistakes. Every line is shown beside its picture before you save, so you can correct it in place.

Why doesn’t normal OCR read my handwriting?

Text OCR such as Tesseract is built to recognize printed letter shapes, one character at a time. Handwriting needs a model trained on handwriting that reads a whole line in context — which is what this page downloads and runs.

Are my handwritten notes uploaded anywhere?

No. The handwriting model downloads to your browser once, and every page is read on your device. You can turn off Wi-Fi after the first use and it still works.
