How to sign a PDF online

  1. Add your PDF

    Drop the PDF you need to sign.

  2. Check the settings

    Make your signature — draw it with a mouse, finger or pen, type your name in a handwriting style, or upload a photo of your signature on white paper — then press Place signature and click the page.

  3. Save the result

    Drag it into position, add the date if the form asks for it, and save the signed PDF.

Why it doesn’t upload

A signature is the one thing you should never leave lying around on someone else’s server — and the documents people sign are leases, contracts, consent forms and tax papers. Here both are put together in your browser: the signature is made in this tab, placed in this tab, and forgotten when you close it.

Worth knowing

  • This puts a picture of your signature on the page, like signing a printout. It is not a certified digital signature: there is no certificate, no audit trail and no tamper seal. When a contract requires those, use the signing service the sender asks for.
  • Signatures are not remembered between visits, on purpose. Keep the PNG of a drawn signature yourself if you sign often, and upload it next time.
  • A photo works best taken straight on, in good light, on plain white paper; shadows and lined paper leave marks behind.
  • The signature is drawn onto the page, so after saving it can’t be moved again. Keep the unsigned original if you may need to sign it differently.

What happens to your file

A drawn signature is captured on a canvas, a typed one is set in a handwriting font, and a photo has its paper made transparent. The result is trimmed to the ink and saved as a PNG, then drawn onto the page at the spot you chose with pdf-lib. This is a visible signature, not a certificate-based digital signature (PAdES).

Questions

How do I sign a PDF without printing it?

Drop the PDF here, draw or type your signature, press Place signature and click the spot on the page. Drag it to adjust, then press Save signed PDF. No printer, scanner or account involved.

Is a signature added this way legally binding?

In many countries a simple electronic signature — a typed or drawn signature placed on a document — can be valid for everyday agreements, much like a signed printout. Some documents need more, such as a certified digital signature or a witness. If you are unsure, ask the person who sent the document what they accept. This is not legal advice.

Can I sign on my phone?

Yes. Draw your signature with your finger in the box; it comes out smooth and thin, the way a pen writes. Then tap the page where it goes.

Can I add the date and my initials too?

Yes. Add today’s date puts the date on the page, ready to drag into place. Add text lets you click anywhere and type initials, a printed name or a title.

Can I sign several places in one document?

Yes. Press Place signature again for each spot, on any page — move between pages with the arrows above the page. Every signature is saved into the PDF.
