What are the upload limits for ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini?

Each service publishes its own limits, and each has two: a file size, and a cap on how much of the file it will read.

  • ChatGPT: 512 MB per file. Text and document files are also capped at 2 million tokens each, and images at 20 MB.
  • Claude: 500 MB per file and up to 20 files in a chat. PDFs can be up to 1,000 pages; up to 100 pages, charts and pictures are analyzed too, and from 101 pages on Claude reads the text only.
  • Gemini: up to 100 MB per file (videos up to 2 GB), and up to 10 files in one prompt.

Checked on OpenAI’s, Anthropic’s and Google’s own help pages on 3 October 2026. These limits change often and some plans get more — if the screen in front of you says something different, it wins.

Why does a small PDF still fail to upload?

Because the size limit is rarely the one you hit. A 300-page textbook can be 8 MB and still exceed a text or page cap, while a 40-page photo report can be 150 MB with hardly any text at all. They fail for opposite reasons and need opposite fixes.

The other usual causes are a password (the assistant can’t decrypt it), a damaged file, or a scan with no text layer, which some assistants accept as images and then answer badly. Error messages rarely say which: “upload failed” or a bare error code such as 400 — the service refused the request — covers all of them. Checking the file first saves the guessing.

Should you compress the PDF or split it?

Compress when the problem is megabytes and the file is mostly pictures: scans, slide decks, photo reports. Compression recompresses the images; the words are untouched, so the assistant reads exactly the same text.

Split when the problem is pages or text. A compressed PDF has the same number of pages and the same words, so it fails the same way. Splitting by chapter also tends to produce better answers: the assistant is working with the part you are asking about rather than skimming a thousand pages.

Is it safe to give a private PDF to an AI assistant?

Uploading to an assistant sends the file to that company, under its own data settings — read them before you share a contract, a medical record or a statement. Black out what the question doesn’t need first.

Preparing the file is a different matter. Checking, compressing and splitting it here happens on your own device, so the only copy that leaves is the one you choose to upload.
