- Work out which problem you have A prompt before the document appears is an open password. An open document with Print greyed out is a permissions flag.
- Find the password if you need one Bank and payroll emails say the format: date of birth as DDMMYYYY, a postcode, the last digits of an account number.
- Decrypt the file Type the password in Remove PDF Password. It is used in your browser tab and never stored or sent — there is no server in the loop.
- Or clear the restrictions For a file that already opens, Unlock PDF Restrictions rewrites it without the print, copy and edit flags.
- Save the copy where you need it The result behaves like any PDF: searchable, printable, and openable on a phone without the prompt.
Questions
Can you open a PDF without the password?
No. An open password means the content is encrypted; nothing here guesses it. Ask the sender for a fresh copy.
Is it safe to type the password into a web page?
Here, the password stays in your browser tab — the file is never uploaded, so neither is the password. On a site that uploads, you hand over both.
Will the unlocked file look different?
No. Decryption does not re-render anything: same pages, text, links and bookmarks.
