Which way should you convert?
It depends on where you will read. A PDF page is a fixed size, so on a six-inch e-reader it means zooming and panning on every page; an EPUB reflows, wrapping the text to the screen and letting you pick the font and size. So a PDF you want to read on a Kindle, Kobo or phone should become an EPUB, and the chapters, headings and pictures come with it.
The other direction is for paper and for sharing. An EPUB has no pages until a reader lays it out, which is no use for printing, annotating in a PDF app, or sending to someone without an e-reader. Converting to PDF typesets it once, as a book: the cover first, each chapter on a new page, and a bookmark for each.
And sometimes you want neither — you want to listen. Reading a PDF aloud uses the voices already on your phone or computer, skips the headers and page numbers that clutter a printed page, and remembers where you stopped.
Questions
Will a converted EPUB work on a Kindle?
Yes. Current Kindles accept EPUB through Send to Kindle, which converts it for the device. Kobo, Apple Books and Google Play Books open EPUB directly.
Can I convert a MOBI or AZW3 book to PDF?
DRM-free ones, yes — read here directly, pictures and cover included. Books bought from a store are usually DRM-protected and can’t be converted by any honest tool.
Why does a converted book look different from the original?
Because it is typeset fresh. An eBook’s own styling is written for a screen that reflows, and printed onto fixed pages it produces fixed widths and fonts that can’t be embedded. Headings, emphasis, lists, tables and pictures are kept; the decoration is not.
Are my books uploaded to be converted?
No. Every conversion runs in your browser tab, including reading the EPUB or MOBI apart and building the new file. Nothing is sent to a server.
